World Oceans Day has fallen on June 8, every year since 1992. It’s a day to honor our connection to Earth's oceans – even if we don't live near a beach – and to learn what we can do to protect ocean habitats. World Oceans Day 2023 has the theme of Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing. Today's World Oceans Day events are fully virtual. The virtual events run from 14 to 17:30 UTC (9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CDT). Revelator: Helping Kelp
Kelps encompass about 100 species of brown seaweeds that grow along almost one-third of the world’s coastlines. The thick algae form underwater forests, providing food and refuge for numerous animals, plus numerous environmental benefits.
New research shows people have long underestimated how these kelp forests help the environment. Now these important ecosystems need our help.
