Green & Climate Job Connections & Spirit Bears
Catastrophe is an opportunity, the future needs your creativity
Paul Nicklen Photography
Several months ago, I received some sad news from my friend Marven (@gitgaatspirit). Maโah, a beloved and gentle little spirit bear, had failed to emerge from her winter den. After she never turned up for the autumn salmon migrations, it became apparent she likely did not make it through the harsh winter. Also absent from the riverbanks was a large, friendly male who Marven called Mushroom due to the bearโs affinity for wild mushrooms. Maโah, which means grandmother in Gitgaโat, lived up to her name as a patient and wise bear, earning her the moniker, โThe Matriarch of the Rainforest.โ Both she and Mushroom were featured in a @natgeo cover story I shot in 2011 that helped protect BCโs coastal forests against an oil pipeline slated to run from Albertaโs tar sands all the way to Kitimat. Although they may never fish the salmon-rich streams again, the impact of the two gentle giants is enshrined within the forest. Thanks to the Gitgaโat and Kitasoo/Xaisโxais First Nations, with the help of Maโah and Mushroom, the next generation of spirit bears have a safe place to call home. With @JedWeingarten and @GitgaatSpirit.
